Year 3 Evacuees board the Mid Hants Railway
On Tuesday 26th September, Year 3 embarked on a journey back in time to the 1940s.
We visited The Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line and boarded a steam train pretending we were evacuees and their teachers. We had name labels to identify us and gas masks in case of an explosion!
It was so interesting to see a steam train still in use and so well preserved. Even the platform and waiting rooms still maintain a 1940s feel!
We learnt about what an evacuee would have packed in their suitcase and even got to pack a suitcase for ourselves! We also discovered food rations and were shocked to find out people were only allowed one egg per week during rationing! We also explored pre-decimal currencies and learnt how our grandparents and great grandparents would have bought their sweets from the village shop with shillings and pence!
Our trip ended with a long ride on the steam train all the way to the end of the line and back again. We looked out over the Hampshire countryside, feeling slightly relieved that we were lucky enough to be returning home to our parents homes that evening and thinking of all those children who wouldn't have been so lucky during the Second World War as they felt anxious about their new homes that awaited them.
A great, sunny trip was had by all!
