Music &The Community

It is very important that pupils at Cheam are aware of their place and role in the local community.

Music is a really good vehicle to develop this sense of being and we invest considerable time and resources in both our outreach and inreach work.

We are always keen for the children at Cheam to share their talents and enjoyment of music in the community and try and involve ourselves in suitable projects.

In recent years we have taken our Jazz Band to play at the Eastbourne Bandstand, Bradfield Mayfayre and Rotherwick Village Hall. The Choir was invited to sing at the Harvest Festival Service for the Royal County of Berkshire Show and a special fund-raising Carol Concert for the Rainbow Trust in London.

The children really enjoy these special events and have lasting memories of the experiences.

We invite members of the local community and children from nearby schools to join us for specific events such as Christmas Cheer, educational workshops or special concerts. These links are very positive, rewarding and constantly evolving.

The school is totally committed to supporting the local community and the Music Department offers opportunities for children from other schools to come and play in our Jazz Band. We have a number of selected children who come to Cheam for private instrumental lessons on a full bursary basis. Cheam music facilities are also on offer and used by local groups and individuals.

One major community project involves our partnership with Kingsclere Primary School. We have really developed this musical link in recent years and this project has become a major and rewarding investment for the school. We support their instrumental programme by offering the services of our flute and brass teachers who spend time at the school working with groups of children and individual pupils. They prepare pupils for exams and arrange suitable concert and performance opportunity. Tim Bennett organises a special choir and prepares the children for concerts both at the school and regular services at St Mary's Church, Kingsclere.

This special community action is offered to Kingsclere Primary School without cost and this partnership is greatly valued and appreciated. Pupils from the school have been to Cheam to take various instrumental exams and been involved in educational workshops and concerts.

Cheam is committed long-term to this project as a tangible way of supporting children in the local community.
